The 13th Commandment

Many of you are familiar with the 12 commandments. You know them well.
The first is: love the LORD your God...
And the second is one like it: love your neighbour as love yourself.
And the third is: you shall have no other Gods besides the LORD...
And jumping to the 12th: you shall not covet...

There was one commandment that Jesus gave that was different from all these. He called it a "new" command. It was different from the others despite its similarities with them, in particular the first two.

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
John 13:34-35 (NIV)

[See my comment below on why I call this the 13th Commandment.]

I have been asked where I got the 12 commandments from. It's simple math. Jesus says the 'first and greatest commandment' is Deut 6:5. Then he says the 'second commandment is like it', that is, Lev 19:18. Then there are Moses' famous '10' Commandments. 2 + 10 = 12.

It's not a serious point I could've just as well have called the 13th Commandment the 'John 13' Commandment. Just as long as you remember while you read this blog that the 1st is the Great Commandment, the 2nd is like it, the 3rd to the 12th are Moses' and the 13th is the John 13:34-35 command.

More will be revealed as I go along.
